Ideas/Advice for small-business based on Copyrighted idea?

I want a small (home) build customized business models / replicas on a character from popular television series to begin. Can anyone recommend the proper procedure required to ensure that all copyrights are protected? Should I had contact with the studio series, to obtain their permission?
